Every construction project requires a big investment. Whether it is a DIY project or you’re a contractor who needs to find affordable building supplies, you should have all the necessary information. It doesn’t hurt to do some research and check the market for prices. It is very important for the quality of your project and for your budget to know how to negotiate the price for your building supplies. If you want to buy building supplies for less, you need to know where and what to search for. Let us help with a few tips!

Buy wholesale

building supplies, building materials, constructionIt’s a known fact that if you buy anything wholesale you’ll get it for less than if you were to buy it retail. That is why you need to create a relationship with a material supplier or more, so you can have access to building materials at wholesale prices. You’ll see that the difference between retail and wholesale prices is significant and you will get to save a lot of money. If you’re working with a contractor, you can let them know that you have your own supplier for building materials or put the two of them in contact. This way, you cut the middleman and have your project done for less. However, this is a great strategy for contractors too because they can create a network of building material suppliers.

Get free delivery

building supplies, truck, constructionIf you’re buying building supplies for a construction project, you will be in a position to negotiate. This is when you can ask for free delivery. Most material suppliers provide free delivery but if you find a company that doesn’t include this, you can plainly ask them about their free delivery policy and if you can benefit from it. This way you will not only save some money by buying building supplies for less, but you also won’t need to pay for a crew to transport and unload them.

Negotiate passionately

building supplies, building materialsIf you’re a good negotiator, now it’s the time to put your skills to work. When you buy wholesale building supplies, you can negotiate the price. The bigger the allocated budget for buying building materials, the bigger the discounts you can receive. Approach three or four building material suppliers, tell them your approximate budget and ask about their prices. However, don’t be fooled by the cheapest quote. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the best quote for you. Check the quality of the building supplies and make sure they are exactly what you need for the job.

Don’t miss the seasonal bargains

building supplies, constructionSeasonal bargains exist because most building material suppliers need to create more space in their warehouses. Also, the prices for some building materials, like pressure-treated wood, tend to go up during some seasons, in this case, in the summer, and to drop when the building material is out of season. Just like plane tickets, hotel rooms, and clothes! It would be great to have your own warehouse, so you can buy out-of-season building materials and store them for your upcoming projects.

Search for local groups that sell building supplies

building supplies, builders, constructionIf nothing works, you can always go online and search for local groups that sell building supplies. Some states even have self-builders and renovators who have their own little syndicate. This way they can buy building supplies at discounted prices. One of the most popular products available on sale now are the solar panels. This happens due to the increased demand for eco-friendly technologies. Just investigate and you will definitely find what you need!

You can always talk to local business owners who sell building supplies and ask them for their quotes. You might get discounts without having to follow all the other steps mentioned above.

Do you suddenly feel the need for a change around the house but you don’t have enough money to invest in a renovation project or to buy new furniture? Why not consider giving your cabinetry a makeover. You can refresh the look of your kitchen, hallway or even bathroom cabinets without having to spend a fortune. Just take a look at our low-cost ways to give your cabinetry a makeover and choose the ones that appeal to you.

Add one, two, three coats of paint

kitchen cabinetryAlthough it doesn’t sound like a fun DIY project, painting your cabinetry can change not only the aspect of your cabinets but also the look and ambiance of the entire room. Choose the right colors and you will easily see the difference! You only need some brushes, paint, work clothes, and a big cup of coffee, and you’re ready to go.

Before you begin the actual painting, make sure you fill in the holes or gaps in the wood of your cabinetry and smooth the surfaces with a fine grit. Wipe everything down with a damp cloth and get rid of any sawdust with a vacuum. Don’t forget to prime! Use an oil-based primer to prepare the area you want to paint because it’s much more durable than a water-based primer. Use sandpaper between every coat of primer, but let it dry before sanding it again.

Only now you’re ready to actually paint your cabinetry. It’s best to use 100% enamel paint because it has a lovely finish and lasts longer. Since it’s water based, it will also be easy to clean up. You can use 3 coats of paint or just keep painting until you’re happy with the result.

Replace, remove, extend

kitchen cabinet shelfThis requires a bit more work but the results are more impressive. For example, you can replace the upper cabinet doors with glass open cabinetry, to create a bright ambiance and add more space to the kitchen. Pay attention to the shelf lines by lining them up, so you can enjoy the same shelf levels in your cabinetry. Paint the inside of the cabinetry white. Or, if you want more drastic changes, you can simply get rid of your cabinetry doors and create a more airy room. Paint the shelves and you’ve just got yourself a new cabinet!

Of course, there are many other things you can change and adjust when it comes to ways to give your cabinetry a makeover. Just grab some power tools and get to work. You can even extend your cabinetry to add more storage space in the room and reinvent your interior design.

One detail can change everything

kitchen cabinet, embellished cabinetIf you’re on a budget, and you probably are because you’re reading this, you can focus on altering or changing only one important detail. Choose the detail that makes the difference! For example, you can change only the countertops or alter the backsplash.

Are you looking for cheaper options? Try embellishments, inserts or cutouts for your cabinet doors. You can choose anything from vintage vibes to patterned sheet metal to decorate a cabinet door. Cutouts add a handmade charm and they’re easy to make! You just need to trace a design on the door and follow the pattern with a drill and a jigsaw. Sand the edges to make them smooth, prime and paint.

If working with tools and paint is not exactly your thing, how about adding curtains to your cabinetry. If you have glass-front cabinets, this is the perfect solution to revive their design and add a fresh touch to your kitchen. You just need to fold the fabric in 1-inch pleats and staple it to the top and bottom of the door. On the inside, of course! Cinch in the middle using straps from matching fabric.

And if you’re not up for DIY projects, you can just contact the local suppliers and choose new cabinets for your home! It’s time-saving and guarantees that new furniture ambiance in the house.

You’re on a new mission: to install artificial turf by yourself. You either want to replace your worn-out artificial grass or you want to install an artificial turf for the first time. This way you can enjoy a beautiful lawn without having to water or care for it in any way. We recommend using eco-friendly artificial turf to protect the environment and your budget.

Installing artificial turf is not rocket science! You have nothing to worry about! It’s not as hard as you might think but you do need to follow certain steps if you want to enjoy a beautiful, even artificial turf in your yard.

Step 1. Prepare the area

If you already have an artificial turf, you need to start by removing it. If the area covered by artificial grass is large, you should consider purchasing or renting a turf cutter to make your job easier. This way you will move faster and get a nice, level surface. Remove not only the old turf but also 3 to 4 inches of the soil underneath. If you don’t have a big lawn and no previous turf, it’s enough to take the top layer of the grass and dirt off with a shovel.

Step 2. Install the edges

If you want to enjoy your artificial turf for years to come, you need to install durable edges around the lawn. You can choose either timber, metal, concrete or brick, whatever you think works best, but make sure the edges are laid according to the heights of the artificial turf piles. Their height can be anywhere from 6 to 45 mm deep. The base layer should be about 20 mm below the top of the lawn’s edges.

Step 3. Cover the area

artificial turf, grass, lawn

Cover the area with 3 to 4 inches of crushed ¾-inch road rock. Spread the rock and pat it into position with a plate compactor or, for smaller lawns, with a hand tamper. The gravel provides a solid base for the lawn while allowing for drainage. You can also use a layer of fine aggregate, like Grano dust or Fine Type 1, but make sure the particles are smaller than 5 mm. When you go to buy the aggregate, make sure you don’t forget your measurements at home, especially the depth.

If you have pets, it would be useful to add a layer of pet waste absorber too. The necessary rate, in this case, would be of ½ pound per square foot. Use the compactor or tamper to pack it. For the last touch before unrolling the new artificial turf, cover the base area with weed barrier fabric and overlap seams by 6 to 12 inches. For fastening the weed membrane in place, use 20d nails around it and along the seams.

Step 4. Unroll the artificial turf

Once you unroll the artificial turf, you should leave it in the sun for a couple of hours, to allow the grass to come to its natural position. Make sure you overlap de edges, so you can make the necessary trimming. Cut the overlapping edges with a utility knife by counting three rows from the edge before making any cut. Arrange the turf into position and remember to leave room along the edges for cutting. Make sure the turf is laid out in the same direction.

Step 5. Secure the artificial turf

artificial turf, lawn, DIY

Secure the artificial turf with 40d nails, placed 3 to 4 inches apart along the edges of the turf. In the center of the lawn, space the nails 12 to 24 inches apart. Along the seams, you should use them every 1 to 2 inches. You need to make sure you don’t place the nails below the surface, to avoid having your grass looking like it has holes.

Finish the installation of artificial turf by pouring white sand or the filler recommended by the manufacturer directly on the turf. You can use a drop spreader, a broom or the back of a rake to make sure you spread it evenly. Every square meter will need about 10-15 kg of sand. The filler will hold the grass in place.

Bonus tip: If this seems too complicated, you can always call professionals in this field. They will finish the job fast and, more importantly, your artificial turf will look flawless.
